Polaris Flies video assures that all are welcome to watch this short message to his cousin James’ (an avid outdoorsman recuperating from a stroke) wife. He also answers questions he has received about fly tying in emails. Given encouragement to new tiers, who often think they can’t tie good enough! (I have no idea why I keep saying bonefish in this video — it’s a tarpon fly for you novices.) Tim ties a tarpon fly with the exact same steps as used in Nuclee-r Flies 102, just simply move the materials to the bend of the hook! Here Tim reveals the # TOP SECRET he learned from his mentor years ago, that commercial flies are NOT tied for the fish! www.1a-fly-fishing.com & a1-flyfishing.com

Tying an Emerger for Tailwaters and Stillwaters. A very easy fly to tie in sizes from 18 down to 24. This fly works and is a constant fish catcher on the San Juan River, Frying Pan River, Henry’s Fork and Crooked River. The rainbows just love this fly in the larger 18 – 20 hook size and the browns prefer 20-24 hook size. I use an Umpqua/TMC 200R hook, Iron Grey thread 6/0, brown fall deer hair, peacock herl and 1.5mm white foam strips. Tying two dozen takes very little time. I also change the thread to yellow 6/0 Uni thread for a lighter color fly for mornings. Use a 6x tippet when you fish with this fly as it is in the surface film and trout get picky about flies they can see for any length of time. Tight lines and good hatches!

Many people would call this style of fly a Spey Fly. I would prefer to call them North American Collar Flies. Spey Flies are very exacting in materials and style. This fly will work very well in all rivers where black and white are popular. Atlantic Salmon can only see black and white in low light situations. Blue is the last color that they can see before the light is lost.
